Ouvintes e relações de escuta musical no espaço digital do Spotify

Title: Ouvintes e relações de escuta musical no espaço digital do Spotify
Abstract: This work aims to understand listeners' music listening relationships on Spotify space, in order to analyze its constitution and functioning as a digital space for music listening, to explore the listeners' connections with the streaming service, to understand the organization and transformation of listening practices, and to reveal the relationships established by listeners with their own listening within this space. The dissertation presents a series of quantitative and qualitative analyses, derived from responses to a questionnaire prepared during the research and administered to a group of 111 Spotify users. The study incorporates critical theoretical approaches from several classic authors, with notable reference to Theodor W. Adorno (1985, 2017, 2020) and Walter Benjamin (2012), and contemporary authors, such as Robert Prey (2015, 2020) and Jack Webster (2022), regarding debates on music listening, technology and society. The research findings highlight the emergence of diverse listening relationships that shape listening practices, habits, conceptions, and experiences on Spotify. Transformations are detected in the musical preferences, listening modes, temporality and spatiality of listeners' musical listening after using the streaming service. Additionally, gender, race, and generational factors emerge as influential elements in the constitution of listening practices within an algorithmic environment.

Title: Kirtans de Krishna Das: Análise dos kirtans Sita Ram e Samadhi Sita Ram do álbum Live on Earth for a limited time only para a criação do kirtan Jaya Sita Ram
Abstract: This research presents the analyses of the kirtans Sita Ram and Samadhi Sita Ram, from Krishna Das’ album Live on Earth: For a Limited Time Only, for the creation of the kirtan Jaya Sita Ram. For this purpose, the systemic modeling methodology was used, which enabled, on one hand, rigorous analyses of the sample and, on the other, the inclusion of the composer’s creative element to address the question: how to create a new song based on two preexisting ones? This methodology made it possible to extract the hypothetical compositional systems of each sample kirtan and to create a systemic model developed from the selection and abstraction of specific parameters. This model was then used as a starting point for musical creation. As a result, a kirtan was produced that differs in microstructure but resembles the sample only in macrostructure. This research offers one perspective on musical creation inspired by Krishna Das’s songs, which may be extended both to her extensive body of work and to that of other Western kirtaniyas.

Homoíne em Moçambique
Abstract: The dissertation entitled “Music as a Teaching Resource in the 3rd Grade of Basic Education: a case study with teachers from the 1st and 2nd Grade Primary School attached to the IFP of Homoíne in Mozambique” investigates the use of music as a pedagogical tool in basic education classes. The main objective of the research was to understand how 3rd grade teachers of Basic Education deal with music in their classes. The study was based on field observations, interviews with teachers and analysis of teaching materials, identifying how these elements are applied in the educational context and also explores the challenges faced by teachers, especially in relation to access to musical resources and adequate teaching materials to enrich the teaching of subjects such as Portuguese Language and Mathematics. The results demonstrate that, although music has significant potential to improve the quality of teaching, it is still underused as a teaching resource in primary education in Mozambique.

Title: Influências 1: composição inspirada em performances dos bateristas Jojo Mayer, Gerwin Eisenhauer e Arthur Hnatek
Abstract: Contemporary music has been profoundly influenced by the interaction between acoustic instruments and electronic resources, which generally results in innovative performances. It has been observed that many drummers use electronic or digital processing to transform the acoustic sounds of the drum set into electronic timbres, employing triggers, audio recording, and software-based manipulation, among other techniques. An inverse approach is also possible that is, representing musical electronic resources through acoustic instruments. Thus, this research explored the characteristics of Popular Electronic Music through an acoustic drum kit. The study emphasizes the relevance of experimental musical practice, and its methodology combines a historiography of the origins of Popular Electronic Music from the emergence of experimental groups and movements such as Krautrock to the expansion of the Electronic Music scene and its subgenres along with performance analyses and artistic practices adjacent to Popular Electronic Music. Furthermore, an original piece titled “Influences 1” (“Influências 1”) was composed and performed, inspired by three renowned drummers: Jojo Mayer, Gerwin Eisenhauer, and Arthur Hnatek. The composition demonstrated that, through attentive listening to the genre’s characteristics, it was possible to simulate typical sonic and rhythmic elements of Popular Electronic Music on an acoustic drum set. The research reinforces the importance of musical experimentation and opens new pathways for performative possibilities using acoustic instruments in contemporary music.
