Title: A Ilusão da Invisibilidade: a subjetividade discursiva do tradutor em Bliss de Katherine Mansfield
Abstract: This study examines the translator’s discursive subjectivity through the analysis of
four Brazilian Portuguese translations of Katherine Mansfield’s short story Bliss. It is
based on the understanding that literary translation is not a neutral process of
linguistic transfer but an interpretive practice that produces meaning. From this
perspective, the study widens Venuti’s (1995) notion of the translator’s invisibility and
adds that every translation is shaped by interpretive acts produced by historically
constituted subjects. The theoretical framework draws on French Discourse Analysis,
particularly the works of Orlandi (2009) and Pêcheux (1999), in dialogue with
Foucault’s (1996) conception of the subject and Venuti’s (1995) discussions of
domestication and foreignization. The corpus consists of the translations of Bliss
published by Cupertino (2000), Albano (2020), Vidal (2023), and Varjão (2024). The
analysis compares selected translation choices, discusses the strategies adopted by
the translators, and relates these choices to the historical, editorial, and professional
conditions that shape each translation. The findings show that the differences among
the translations result not only from linguistic preferences but also from the conditions
of production that constitute translators as subjects of interpretation. Finally, the study
argues that the translator’s subjectivity should be understood not as the expression
of individual intention but as a discursive effect produced through the relationship
between language, history, and ideology, allowing the translator to be understood as
a translator-author.

Title: A tradução e a retradução do gótico americano em The Haunting of Hill House, de Shirley Jackson.
Abstract: The present study proposes a comparative analysis of the translation and retranslation of the
American Gothic elements in the book The Haunting of Hill House, written by
North-American author Shirley Jackson, utilizing the technical translation procedures
described by Barbosa (1990) in her book Procedimentos técnicos de tradução: uma nova
proposta. To this end, we first conceptualized and defined the American Gothic, linking it to
the elements present in the book. Later, since the first translation, done by Edna Jansen de
Mello, was published in 1983, and the retranslation, done by Débora Landsberg, was
published years later, in 2021, the study also drew upon the ideas of retranslation outlined by
Berman (2017), Gambier (2020), and Faleiros and Mattos (2014). The findings revealed that
the translation procedure most frequently used was literal translation, followed by omission
versus explicitation and transposition. Eventually, it was concluded that a first translation is
not always necessarily more prone to naturalization, and that the reasons for retranslation
vary; furthermore, it was concluded that literary translation, since based on texts that allow for
diverse readings and interpretations, is a personal and creative activity. Thus, the focus was on
the autonomy and freedom exercised by both translators and on the differences between their
translation choices.

Title: Tradução comentada de artigos científicos de economia: uma abordagem funcionalista baseada em Nord
Abstract: This monograph presents an annotated translation project involving ten specialized Economics research articles translated from Brazilian Portuguese into international English for publication in Revista Economia Ensaios. The study aims to examine the main translation challenges and difficulties encountered throughout the translation process. The theoretical framework draws on Functionalist Translation Theory, particularly Christiane Nord’s (1991; 1997) contributions regarding Skopos and the principle of loyalty, while also incorporating perspectives from Terminology Studies and specialized translation scholars. Methodologically, this research adopts a retrospective and introspective approach. Based on a corpus consisting of five selected articles, ten representative cases were identified and classified according to Nord’s three categories of translation problems: cultural, pragmatic, and linguistic. The analysis discusses the strategies adopted to address gaps in the target audience’s background knowledge, including the use of translation couplets for culture-specific items and legal terms (Plano de Metas and Fiscal Responsibility Law), the expansion of institutional acronyms (CNPJ), and adaptation to international orthotypographic conventions, such as the use of em dashes. The findings also highlight the importance of rigorous terminological research in preventing structural false cognates (bank branch) and ensuring the accurate use of macroeconomic terminology (Net Funded Debt). The results confirm the initial research hypothesis, demonstrating that the main challenges in specialized Economics translation arise from two dimensions: extralinguistic factors, related to professional and technical working conditions, and intralinguistic factors, involving issues of standardization, terminology, and academic writing conventions. The functionalist framework proved effective in providing a systematic basis for justifying the adaptations and solutions required by the academic genre.
